Some Skin Care Myths

Unfortunately, there are some frequently repeated skin care myths that are so repeated that many people just believe them. Read on to learn about some of the more common ones.

Tanning Beds Are A Safe Alternative To The Sun

Contrary to what some believe, tanning beds are not a safe alternative to the sun. While it might be true that some tanning beds filter out burning UVB rays, you will still be exposed to dangerous UVA rays in a tanning bed. Plus, there is the little tidbit published in the recent Journal of American Academy of Dermatology study in which fecal matter bacteria was discovered in several "cleaned" New York, New York tanning salons. Well, that makes me want to avoid tanning beds.

Cucumbers Reduce Puffy Eyes

Cucumbers have little to no effect on puffy eyes. Cold cucumbers may reduce puffiness, but it is the temperature and not any ingredients in the cucumbers that is doing the trick. Cold spoons will work just as well. Cold used tea bags will likely work even better because of an anti-inflammatory ingredient in tea.

The Way Your Mother Looks Today Is How You Will Look In The Future

Genetics certainly plays a role in how we age, but you can't simply look at mom to see how you will look in a few decades or so. The reason is that the sun and environmental factors play the biggest role in how our skin ages. Things like sun exposure, drinking and smoking habits, stress, and sleep have a much larger effect on our skin. So, in order to look younger than your mother when you reach her age, start developing better skin care habits than her.

In this article I discussed a few common skin care myths. Stay tuned for additional myths in future articles. However, by ignoring the fads and sticking to the proven basics, you can avoid many of the skin care myths. The basics include a daily ritual of washing your face, moisturizing, and wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater.
